I’m not sure how far
back my memory will reach, so I’ll begin in the present. I live in
Arlington, just outside of DC, and have been here for more than 20 years.
I am a fifth grade language arts teacher--reading and writing. I love my work,
and I especially enjoy the age group. I’m a Steelers fan, but I am
trying very hard to embrace the Nationals and the Capitals so I can have a team
in the off-season. I have a son who just finished his sophomore year at
Oberlin. He's studying math, is a musician, and will be heading to
Budapest in September for a semester abroad. After a long and mostly
happy marriage, my husband and I divorced, though we remain close friends.
Teaching was a career change for me; I worked in non-classroom education for
many years, primarily in the arts. I attended Pitt, majored in English,
and became active in the Three Rivers Shakespeare Festival. This led to a
job at Pittsburgh Ballet Theater where I helped launch their education and
outreach program; I also returned to Pitt and earned a M.Ed. with an emphasis
on museum education.
After moving to DC, I
worked in the education department at the National Museum of Women in the Arts,
managing projects and writing grants. Then, like many parents, when my
son started elementary school, I volunteered in the classroom. This
eventually led to me returning to school to earn a M.Ed. in Elementary
Education. In between these paragraphs are all the experiences that matter
most, the years spent building a life—creating friendships, falling in love,
marriage, dinner parties, traveling, buying a house, raising a son, soccer
games, family vacations, losing my parents, falling out of love—and learning
how to be a good grown-up.
I’m undecided about
the reunion, but would enjoy hearing from anyone who wants to reconnect.
