2022 - 50th Lived around Pasadena California 72-76. At least around Wednesdays, the rest of the week was spent in the mountains, desert, Canyon, going to hear music or visit people. Saw Jamie Demmel rarely, but found time to spend with Louis Rose, RJ Simonds, Roland Fellows, Mike Collery, John "Harpo" Whittington, Terence Keenan, Peter Erskine, Jack Tenace, Pat Keenan, and other high school friends. Met my now-wife Shirley and her son Joel in 74 thanks indirectly to hitchhiking, which was responsible for many significant experiences. Lived in Ndélé (Dar al-Kuti) Central African Republic 76-78. At the time CAR (CAE most of that time) was a horrible dictatorship and a fantastically wonderful place. Later it became a democracy and a total disaster. Back to Pittsburgh in 78 briefly, then back to Pasadena briefly, returning to Pittsburgh to build a log house in Greene County and teach in Oakland. Got to know Jim March when he lived in Jollytown. Shirley and Joel joined me, meaning I ran out of money and had to get a job, sucked back into academia at WVU. Worked there a few years, then on to Providence and Nova Scotia. Eventually back to Pittsburgh from 87-03 (including a few years behind the Mt. Lebanon library), so my daughters mostly grew up there, and amazingly live there now. Moved to Augusta GA, but we visit the daughters and grandsons at every opportunity. Been doing neuroscience mostly, studying time, belief, love, memory, .... Nowadays work a lot on electroretinography. Every once in a while I learn something new and release some dopamine. Besides work I play soccer, despite breaking my leg badly in 2002 at the Oval. When the web came along in 92 I put up my Eric Dolphy discography, which has led to hundreds of beautiful contacts around the world. Finding out that I went to high school with Scott DeVeaux was a cool surprise. All along I've been grateful to Debra Burke Pace's father for turning me on to so much great music. Art Manion's grandson plays bass clarinet and actually knew who Dolphy was! I could live on Belgian beer, hot peppers, and mushrooms, but occasionally try something else. Virulently anti-car (Yay Paul), and trying to avoid getting killed riding around here. Huge Pirates fan, but may not ever play in the majors, and spend too much money going to bars to watch the Steelers and Penguins. Hundreds of other Pittsburgh fans at the bars at least. Looking forward to seeing a few people I remember and meeting the rest of you! Not to mention hanging out with the grandsons and at D's. |
