2022 - 50th So much in life is random. In March 1974, I traveled to Charlottesville to visit a friend at the University of Virginia. I quit work, enrolled at UVA, and graduated in 1976. Given a choice between work and grad school, I went straight to Pitt Law and graduated in 1979. I never planned to practice law or stay in Pittsburgh, but I needed a job. I accepted an offer from Reed Smith Shaw & McClay in Pittsburgh and stayed for 41 years. In late 1979, I walked past an auditorium where the Pittsburgh Savoyards were rehearsing a Gilbert & Sullivan show. I had no interest in G&S, but I saw pretty girls, so I auditioned for the next show. It proved to be a good idea, because I met my future wife (now Michele Gray-Schaffer) on stage in 1980 and married her a year later. 40 years and going strong. In 1989, Tom Murphy convinced me to become an international bike race promoter. For eight years, my friend Bud Harris and I organized some of the biggest races in the U.S., including the Thrift Drug Classic, and we brought the Olympic Cycling Trials to Pittsburgh in 1996. I also did some racing. Cycling with the winners of 15 8 Tours de France was fun, but the high point was winning the Tour of West Deer in 2000. I quit racing after the first major accident. In my day job, I worked as a bankruptcy lawyer. Representing indenture trustees in cross-border litigation with Lehman Brothers and Argentina was fascinating, but nothing was more satisfying than defeating efforts to move the Penguins out of Pittsburgh. Over the years, I’ve served on the boards of the Pittsburgh Civic Light Opera, Rodef Shalom Congregation (past-president), and the Pittsburgh Sports & Festival Federation (First Night). My wife Michele refuses to retire from her job as Cantor at B’nai Abraham Congregation in Butler. Our children are great. Abby is an occupational therapist and jazz singer outside of D.C. Ethan edits documentaries for a studio in L.A. Greg works on a farm West Virginia. No grandchildren yet. I’m now teaching at Pitt Law, writing for Oxford University Press, and serving as an expert witness in cross-border bankruptcies. After a 35-year break, I’m back on stage and getting some good reviews in Gilbert & Sullivan shows. Goal for cycling this year is 5000 miles. |
