2012 - 40th Bill, I have finally accepted, with disappointment that I am not going to make it to Pittsburgh for the reunion. Need a clone to cover all the ground. But I wanted to contribute to this fantastically amusing and memory flooding effort that has been set in motion. After graduating with this (apparently) rowdy crew of Lebo '72 I went off to University of Pittsburgh thanks to some last minute calls by Mr. Price since I had not completed my application on time. This was to become one of the recurrent themes of my life. Never quite having it all together, things somehow, nonetheless, work out. Studied Philosophy and Computer Science at Pitt which is ironic given how relatively inept I am with personal computing, but I learned FORTRAN and COBOL programing on punch cards and these small, annoying machines just don't make complete sense to me. Worked for a while at Pitt in computing and later as a Physician's Assistant, but just couldn't put aside thoughts of trying to go to med school. Got into Pitt, trained in New York City and came out to San Francisco to finish off a general academic Fellowship. Was impressed and humbled by the impact of the HIV epidemic on patients and colleagues in New York and found myself doing both prevention and treatment work at UCSF in the AIDS and substance abuse treatment divisions. The academic scene is not so much fun with all the funding challenges, but I have golden hand cuffs that will keep me here a few more years. But I would stay anyway because the students, patients and the people I work with are great. I have enough material for many years’ worth of television and movie scripts. "You just can't make this stuff up" is the thought that often goes through my head with the patients in the methadone clinic. I married a doctor-loving finance guy named Steve who puts up with my schedule and my messy ways and got me into scuba diving (I saw that someone from the class lived on Bonaire - jealous!), We have a parrot named Ziggy, a nice but high maintenance house north of San Francisco in Marin. We are very lucky. I am pretty sure that I was one of the sports writers for the MLHS newspaper -- Paul Josephson will remember this better. So it’s only right that my main hobby now is baseball, specifically Giant's baseball. Am thinking with all the Performance Enhancing Drug problems in baseball these days I might yet have a 2nd career to look forward to. Have fun at the reunion and will be thinking of you all. |
