April 30, 1954-May 8, 2021
Ivy Case (née Barbara Buerklin), a long-time resident of Columbia, Missouri, died unexpectedly. She was born in Philadelphia, raised in Paoli and Mount Lebanon, Pennsylvania but made Missouri her home since she was 18 years old. A mother of seven children, Ivy was a fierce, unrelenting and devoted supporter of her children; a brood as diverse and creative as could be imagined. She was the ultimate caregiver and a source of constant, positive and reaffirming energy which made everyone around her happier and more fulfilled. Her death leaves a large gap in leadership, strength and compassion not only for her family, but for the whole community. Ivy was a dedicated midwife, birthing over 1,000 babies, most in the mid-Missouri region. She was instrumental in passing state legislation pertinent to Missouri midwives in 2007 with the slogan, “Home births are as American as apple pie.” Ivy volunteered in Honduras and then in 2013 spent a year in Uganda volunteering at the Ot Mywal Me Kure birth center. Next she went to Bali, Indonesia. Upon her return to Columbia, Ivy focused on her other passion — art. She became the Executive Director of the Orr Street Studios in Columbia, where in 2019 she presented her creative, one-woman exhibit, “Children be Seated.” Ivy volunteered for Humanity for Children, where, during numerous trips to remote Tanzania and Rwanda, she trained over 100 traditional midwives. When not traveling, Ivy, as a self-taught artist, enjoyed spending time in her home art studio and in her garden. She was a life-long voracious reader. Ivy is preceded in death by her husband, Danny Case; her father, David Buerklin; and daughter, Amelia. She is survived by her mother, Cornelia Buerklin (Sewickley, Pennsylvania); her sisters: Joanne Swift (Hobe Sound, Florida) and Susan Buerklin (Lou Romagnoli - Sewickley, Pennsylvania); and her children: Matt Kitzi (Laura - Columbia, Missouri), Travis Parsons (Columbia, Missouri), Sam Parsons (Las Cruces, New Mexico), Arianna Parsons (Tyrell Thacker - Las Cruces, New Mexico), Alex White (Sami - Columbia, Missouri) and Abi White (Grants Pass, Oregon). Ivy was the best Oma to Adikan Parsons, Ava and Boone Kitzi, Thomas and Vincent Thacker and Ilka White. A celebration of Ivy’s life will be held from 2-5 p.m. on Friday, May 21 at Les Bourgeois Bistro, Rocheport, Missouri. All who loved Ivy are welcome. To fulfill Ivy’s dream, Humanity for Children is building a birthing center and mothers’ waiting home in the remote village of Loibor-Siret in Massailand, Tanzania. It will be named Ivy’s House. Donations can be made via www.humanityforchildren.org or mailed to Humanity for Children, 2101 West Broadway #103-131, Columbia, MO 65203. Please note “For Ivy’s House” on your donation which honors this remarkable woman who touched so many lives. Posted online on May 18, 2021 obit |
