Jim was a statewide leader in health-care law and the managing partner of a leading Tallahassee-based legal and lobbying firm. He was known as a passionate, tireless advocate and counselor. He served a wide range of clientele, but is best remembered for his precedent setting work in the launch of the Florida Lottery in 1986 and for a series of closely watched cases dealing with the expansion of hospital services in and beyond Florida. "He was passionate about everything," said Steve Metz, a law partner." He was a very intense person, working night and day to prepare for a case. He brought the same spirit home to his wife and children." Adam Goodman, a longtime friend and noted political adviser, said he was "A truly unbelievable dad and friend who touched people with his compassion, sincerity and drive for life." "Jim was driven to excel in every aspect of his life - professionally, as a father and husband, and as a loyal and devoted friend," said Charlie Bartlett, a partner in a prominent Sarasota law firm and a friend of Jim's since law school. Jim was a graduate of Ohio State University and the College of Law at Stetson University, where he was managing editor of the law review. After graduation, Jim was a clerk for the Florida Supreme Court Justice Ben Overton, before joining the Messer Vickers law firm in Tallahassee. While there, Jim was appointed by Gov. Bob Martinez as the first general counsel of the Florida Lottery and distinguished himself for helping hospitals with certificates of need and other service and facility-expansion initiatives. He also taught business law as an adjunct professor at Florida State University. In 1999, Jim joined forces with leading Tallahassee lawyer-lobbyist Steve Metz, and longtime attorney Warren Husband, to form Metz Hauser Husband, now known as Metz Hauser Husband and Daughton, with the recent addition of lawyer-lobbyist Jim Daughton. Recently, Jim was recruited and retained as part of the legal team helping to launch the Tennessee Lottery, run by former Florida Lottery secretary Rebecca Paul. A loving husband and dedicated father, Jim also is survived by a son, Alex of Tallahassee; a daughter, Sydney of Tallahassee; his loving mother, Letty Levitt; a sister, Linda Kahn (and husband Michael) of Orlando; a niece, Lisa Kahn; and a nephew, David Kahn (and wife Alice). He was preceded in death by his father, Sydney Hauser, and a sister, Debbie Hauser. |
