Phil Spring, age 55, of Pittsburgh, died suddenly on Monday, February 9, 2009 at Allegheny General Hospital.
He was born on November 16, 1953, at AGH, a son of the late Charles A., Sr. and Helen E. Spring. Philip attended Lincoln Elementary, Mellon Junior High, and Mt. Lebanon Senior High School. He graduated in 1972. Philip then trained at Parkway West Technical School in the automotive program and worked for a few years at Sauter's Garage, Banksville Road. He went on to work at a number of dealerships as a service writer. Philip continued his education at Duff's Business Institute in the secretarial and court reporting programs. He got his break when he went to work at Greater Pittsburgh Airport for US Air. He started as a clerk in the overhaul hangar, advanced to the reservations department in Parkway Center, and progressed to the international reservations desk. When US Air cut back, Philip used his automotive experience again at Auto Perfection in Bethel Park. He subsequently returned to the travel industry as an agent for his final position. Philip was active at Southminster Presbyterian Church as a youth. In those years he took pride in his black 1964 Ford Custom two-door. His best elapsed time was 15.1 seconds at 90.5 mph at the quarter mile, Keystone Raceway. It was quite a feat for a little 289 V-8 to pull a 3800 pound car at such a speed. Philip loved working with his hands. At one point, the rebuilding of his Ford's engine took place in the living room of his parents' home. He also liked the challenge of boating on the rivers of Pittsburgh in his Stingray. Philip enjoyed working with people and was always willing to help somebody. He often volunteered at soup kitchens during the holidays. He was an optimist and anticipated that things could only get better. He had a wry sense of humor, too. At his father's funeral, he introduced himself as "the caboose," the youngest of four children. Philip is survived by his Sister Elizabeth Merchant and her husband Allan, of Wayne, NJ; his Brother Charles Spring and wife Rose of Verona; his Brother Richard Spring of Bethel Park; Nieces April Spring Casey and Lauri Spring; and Nephews Edward, Douglas, and Andrew Merchant, David Spring, and Kevin and Jason Spring.
